Common Broken Key Problems
Snapped or broken blades
Blades can snap at the neck after years of use, especially on flip keys. If part of the blade is stuck in a lock or the ignition, don't try to dig it out — call us.
Damaged key housings
Cracked casings, broken flip mechanisms and missing buttons are common. Sometimes the electronics are fine and only the housing needs attention.
Worn keys
Worn blades become unreliable in the doors or ignition, and can contribute to wear on the locks themselves.
Remote / fob problems
Buttons that don't respond, a remote that only works close up, or a fob that's stopped entirely. A battery is sometimes the cause, but not always.
Keys That No Longer Work Correctly
If the car doesn't recognise the key, the remote has stopped working, or the key won't turn smoothly, the problem could lie in the key's electronics, the blade, or the lock. We'll help identify the cause before recommending anything.
Where the key's electronics need to be set up again, see car key programming.
Repair or Replacement?
Whether a key can be repaired or needs replacing depends on the type of key and the extent of the damage. A broken housing with healthy electronics may be repairable; a key with damaged electronics or a badly worn blade may need replacing. Not every key can be repaired, and we'll be honest about which option makes sense.
Cutting a replacement blade
Where the blade is broken or worn, a new blade can be cut to match your vehicle's locks.
Programming where required
If the key's chip or remote needs to be paired with the car, we program it where the vehicle supports it. A full replacement is covered on car key replacement.
Broken Keys and Door or Ignition Problems
A key that snaps in a door lock or ignition can leave a fragment behind, and a worn ignition can put extra strain on a key. If your key is difficult to turn or stuck in the ignition, the issue may be the lock rather than the key — see car ignition repair.
If you can't get into the vehicle because the key has broken, we can help with vehicle entry too.

Broken Car Keys FAQs
Can a broken car key be repaired?
Sometimes. It depends on the key type and the damage. A broken housing may be repairable; damaged electronics or a badly worn blade usually mean a replacement.
My key snapped in the ignition — what should I do?
Avoid trying to remove the fragment yourself, as this can damage the ignition. Call us and we'll advise.
Will a repaired key need programming?
If the original electronics are reused, often not. If the chip or remote is replaced, it will need programming to the vehicle.
My remote only works sometimes — is it broken?
It could be the battery, a fault in the remote or a programming issue. Describe the symptoms and we'll help identify it.
Can you cut a new blade for my existing fob?
For many keys, yes. We can cut a new blade to fit your vehicle where suitable.
Do you come to me?
Yes. For suitable jobs we work at the vehicle — at home, work or wherever it's parked.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the key, the damage and whether repair or replacement is needed. Call for a quote.
