Car Key Programming

Need a vehicle key programmed? Immediate Access provides mobile car key programming for many cars and vans across Southampton and surrounding Hampshire areas.

What Car Key Programming Means

Modern car keys aren't just pieces of shaped metal. Most contain electronics that communicate with the vehicle. Programming is the process of registering a key with your car so the vehicle recognises it and allows it to unlock the doors, operate the central locking or start the engine.

Systems differ between manufacturers, models and model years. That's why we always ask for the vehicle details first and confirm what's possible before attending.

Types of Key We Program

Transponder / chip keys

A small chip inside the key sends a signal to the car's immobiliser. If the car doesn't recognise the chip, the engine won't start — even if the blade turns.

Remote central locking

The buttons that lock and unlock the doors operate separately from the immobiliser chip and often need setting up in their own right.

Smart / proximity keys

Keyless-entry systems detect the key nearby so you can unlock and start the car without inserting it. Programming these depends heavily on the vehicle.

Cars and vans

We program keys for many cars and commercial vans. Call with the make, model and year to check yours.

Why Cutting the Blade Isn't Always Enough

On older vehicles, a correctly cut key might be all you need. On many modern vehicles, a cut blade will open the doors manually but won't start the engine until the key's electronics have been programmed to the car. Remote buttons may also stay inactive until they're set up.

This is why a cheap cut key from a high-street kiosk often won't drive the car — and why programming is part of almost every replacement, spare and lost key job we do.

Replacement-key programming

When a key is lost, damaged or faulty, the new key is programmed to the vehicle. See car key replacement.

Spare-key programming

Adding an extra key so the car recognises it alongside your existing one. See spare car keys.

Mobile Programming at Your Vehicle

Where the vehicle supports it, we program keys on site using dedicated equipment — at home, at work or wherever the car is parked. There's no need to arrange a dealership visit for suitable jobs.

If you've bought a key or fob yourself, call us with the details first. Not every supplied key is compatible or of suitable quality, and we'll advise before you rely on it.

Information We Need for a Quote

  • Vehicle registration, make, model and approximate year
  • The type of key — remote, transponder or smart key
  • Whether you have a working key, and whether you've bought a key yourself
  • What's happening — new key, key not recognised, remote not working
  • Where the vehicle is

We may need proof of ownership or authority to access the vehicle before carrying out programming.

Car Key Programming FAQs

What is car key programming?

It's the process of registering a key's electronics with your vehicle so the car recognises it for locking, unlocking and starting.

Why won't my newly cut key start the car?

On many modern vehicles the key's chip must be programmed to the immobiliser. A cut blade alone won't start the engine.

Can you program a key I bought online?

Sometimes. Some supplied keys aren't compatible or are poor quality. Call with the details and we'll advise.

Can every car key be programmed at the vehicle?

No. Systems differ by manufacturer, model and year, and some can't be programmed outside a dealer. We'll confirm before attending.

My remote has stopped working — does it need reprogramming?

It may, but a flat battery or a faulty key are also common causes. Describe the problem and we'll help identify it.

Do you program smart and keyless keys?

For many vehicles, yes. Suitability depends on the specific system.

What information do you need?

Your registration, make, model, year, the key type, whether you have a working key, and the vehicle's location.
